The role bridges device physics, process optimization, and practical circuit design, contributing directly to the European photonics ecosystem through involvement with the Photonic Integration Technology Centre (PITC), JePPIX Pilot Line, and Chips for Europe initiatives. The research aims to deliver verified models that designers can confidently use across a broad range of workflows for complex PICs.
Applicants should hold a master's degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, photonics, or a related field. Essential qualifications include deep technical understanding of semiconductor device physics (carrier dynamics, optical gain, waveguide optics), the ability to simplify complex physical behaviors for efficient mathematical modeling, hands-on skills in experimental characterization and data analysis, and proficiency in programming (Python, MATLAB) and simulation tools. While expertise in photonic integration is not mandatory, relevant background, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn are required.
The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), plus a year-end bonus (8.3%), annual vacation pay (8%), pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and a Staff Immigration Team with a 30% tax compensation scheme for international candidates.
