About this position
This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on the localized delivery of beneficial microbiomes to promote oral biofilm health, targeting innovative preventive treatments for periodontitis. The project is a collaboration between the Lab of Periodontology and Oral Microbiology (Prof. Wim Teughels), the Chemical and Biochemical Reactor Engineering and Safety division (Prof. Kristel Bernaerts), and the Soft Matter Rheology and Technology division (Prof. Christian Clasen). The research aims to address the limitations of current periodontitis treatments, which often rely on antibiotics and mechanical plaque removal, by developing sustainable alternatives that support robust, healthy biofilm development.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting more than half of adults, with significant implications for systemic health, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The project will combine microbiological expertise with biochemical engineering approaches, leveraging electrospinning, biofilm reactor setups, and systems biology tools. Key research activities include: (i) electrospinning and formulation development with desired properties, (ii) in silico microbiome design using systems biology network analysis, and (iii) in vitro validation in a custom-developed biofilm bioreactor system.
As a PhD candidate, you will join a vibrant interdisciplinary team and benefit from KU Leuven’s competitive and international research environment. The university is ranked among the top 100 globally and offers access to cutting-edge technologies and expertise. The city of Leuven provides a lively, historic, and diverse student community, located just 30 minutes from Brussels.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in (bio)chemical engineering, bioscience engineering, or a related field. Required skills include experience in microbiological culturing and analysis techniques, familiarity with systems biology methods (such as genome scale metabolic network modelling and flux balance analysis), and advanced English proficiency. Experience in biofilm development and analysis, as well as knowledge of electrospinning or polymer processing techniques, is considered advantageous. The ideal candidate is a passionate researcher with strong teamwork, critical thinking, and project management abilities.
The position offers a PhD fellowship with a competitive salary, full support for research activities, and opportunities to participate in national and international meetings. KU Leuven is committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity and equal opportunity. For accessibility or support questions, assistance is available via the provided contact email.
To apply, upload your CV, transcript, and motivation letter through the KU Leuven online portal. For more information, contact Prof. dr. ir. Kristel Bernaerts at [email protected]. Application deadline is March 19, 2026.
