About this position

The NanoComputing Research Lab at the Integrated Circuits group, Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in mixed-signal circuit design for physics-based computing. This opportunity is part of the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant, THERMODON, focusing on Oscillatory Neural Networks (ONNs) and their application to challenging combinatorial optimization problems. ONNs leverage the dynamics of coupled oscillators to efficiently solve problems via energy minimization, offering a promising alternative to classical computing architectures.

As a PhD candidate, you will design and develop mixed-signal circuits for ONN implementation, model and simulate computing tasks such as combinatorial optimization and differential equations, and participate in at least two chip tapeouts as proof of concept. You will explore ONN topologies, analyze power, performance, and area, and collaborate within the interdisciplinary NanoComputing Research Lab. The position emphasizes clear communication, teamwork, and dissemination of research through high-impact journals and international conferences.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in analog and mixed-signal circuit design and simulation. Proficiency in IC design tools (SPICE, Cadence, MATLAB) and tapeout flow is required. The ideal candidate is research-oriented, collaborative, and fluent in English. The position offers full-time employment for four years, with a competitive salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid parental leave, and additional allowances for commuting, home working, and internet costs. International candidates benefit from a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) and support from the Staff Immigration Team.

At TU/e, you will join a dynamic, ambitious university with a strong international network and a collaborative culture. The Electrical Engineering department is renowned for its innovative research and close ties to high-tech industry, providing an inspiring environment for tackling complex, socially relevant challenges. The campus offers excellent technical infrastructure, childcare, and sports facilities, all within walking distance of the central train station.

To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, including a cover letter, CV with publications and references, transcripts, MSc thesis and published papers (or links), and IELTS or TOEFL results. Only complete applications will be considered. The vacancy will remain open until filled, with a deadline of February 5, 2026. Please note that applications sent by email or post will not be processed, and a pre-employment screening may be part of the selection procedure.
