About this position

?? ?? Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Computational Mechanics, Additive Manufacturing, and Mechanistic Machine Learning ?? ?? (SPRING 2025/FALL 2025)The Intelligent Multiscale Mechanics for Predictive Advanced Computational Technology (IMMPACT) Lab (https://lnkd.in/gNccgNQg) at Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Virginia Tech, led by Dr. Sourav Saha, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position. We are seeking highly motivated and talented candidates with a passion for advancing the fields of scientific machine learning, computational mechanics, and additive manufacturing.? About the ResearchOur research focuses on exploring the mechanics and microstructural evolution, and resulting property variation during metal additive manufacturing, with an emphasis on using in situ monitoring signals and dimensional analysis to predict mechanical properties like fatigue. We are pioneering a novel mechanistic machine learning technology called "Interpolating Neural Networks" that will make a significant impact on physics-based and data-intensive modeling of advanced manufacturing systems, materials design, and beyond.?? Key Research Areas:Scientific Machine LearningMetal additive manufacturingMultiscale computational modelingMechanical property prediction (e.g., fatigue)? Eligibility Requirements:Strong academic background in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.Solid understanding of continuum mechanics and numerical methods.Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python/MATLAB, C++) and a keen interest in computational research.Prior experience in additive manufacturing or machine learning is a plus but not required.?? What We Offer:A fully funded position, including tuition and a competitive stipend.Opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.Access to state-of-the-art computational and experimental facilities.Mentorship from leading experts in the field.?? How to Apply:Interested candidates should send the following documents to Dr. Sourav Saha (Email: [email protected]):A detailed CVA short cover letter outlining research interests and relevant experienceContact information for at least two referencesAcademic transcriptsInterested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Saha as soon as possible! For more information, visit https://www.souravsaha.net or contact Dr. Saha directly (Email: [email protected]). hashtaghashtag#FundedPhDPositionhashtaghashtag#PhDOpportunitySourav Saha…more ?? ??
