About this position

The Laboratory of Autophagy and Membrane Dynamics at KU Leuven, led by Professor Alex van Vliet, invites applications for a PhD position focused on understanding how autophagy degrades toxic cargo. The lab is part of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and is renowned for its research into the molecular mechanisms of autophagy initiation and membrane dynamics. By integrating in vitro reconstitution, structure-function studies, biochemistry, and cell biological approaches, the group aims to uncover how selective autophagy targets and eliminates toxic aggregates and damaged organelles.

This project will investigate the molecular mechanisms by which autophagy machinery recognizes and degrades protein aggregates and organelles, a process critical for cellular health and longevity, especially in post-mitotic cells like neurons. The research will utilize advanced methodologies, including high-resolution fluorescence microscopy, quantitative proteomics (HDX and XL MS), (cryo-)electron microscopy, and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. Initial studies will be conducted in tractable cell lines, with subsequent work in iPSC-derived neuronal models and patient samples, providing a translational aspect relevant to neurodegeneration and ageing.

The successful candidate will join a highly supportive, international research group with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and core facilities. The group offers a stimulating environment with English as the primary language, flexible work schedules, and integration into structured doctoral training programs. The position provides opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development within KU Leuven’s extensive scientific network.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular or Structural Biology, Biological/Medical Sciences, or a closely related field. Essential skills include critical thinking, experimental design, rigorous data analysis, and fluency in English. Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques, fluorescence microscopy, advanced cell manipulation, and data analysis tools is advantageous but not required.

KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, fostering a respectful and supportive academic environment. The research group is well funded, ensuring resources for ambitious projects and access to cutting-edge technologies.

The application deadline is January 20, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. dr. Alex van Vliet at [email protected]. Apply via the KU Leuven job portal using the provided link.
