The University of Bremen is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Advanced Ceramics Group (Faculty 4 – Production Engineering) for research in advanced ceramic materials for solar photothermal energy conversion. This DFG-funded project focuses on the development of plasmonic ceramic open-cell foams, combining an inert ceramic matrix (alumina or aluminum nitride) with surface-deposited or incorporated plasmonic transition-metal nitrides (TiN, ZrN, HfN). The research aims to enhance the efficiency of solar thermal systems, contributing to the green energy transition.
Key research activities include the fabrication of ceramic foams, synthesis of transition metal nitrides via magnesiothermic reduction in molten salts, and the use of advanced imaging techniques such as X-ray tomography and electron microscopy. The project is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fieback’s group at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, focusing on thermodynamic investigations of the materials. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct independent research, present at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, engineering, materials science, or a related field, with a strong background in inorganic/solid-state chemistry or applied materials science. Experience with imaging and image analysis, including programming skills, is highly desirable. Proficiency in both German and English at C1 level is required.
