About this position
Constructor University, formerly Jacobs University, is a private, state-accredited, English-language university located in Bremen, Germany. Renowned for its international diversity and transdisciplinary cooperation, Constructor University ranks among the top 25 percent of universities worldwide and is the second most international university globally, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university offers a vibrant residential campus with over 1,600 students from 110 nations and a strong commitment to academic freedom, sustainability, and equal opportunity.
This full-time, three-year PhD position in Cellular Neurobiology is available immediately within a recently established research group focused on developing human-relevant models for neurobiology. The group utilizes induced pluripotent stem cells to generate 3D brain organoids, enabling the study of neurotoxicity, neurodevelopmental factors (including sex hormones, environmental toxicants, and genetic or developmental disorders), and mechanisms shaping early brain function.
The PhD project centers on generating and characterizing human brain organoids from male and female donors. You will analyze their electrophysiological activity using multi-electrode array (MEA) technology, with the goal of quantifying network metrics and linking them to developmental trajectories within the organoids. The research investigates how various biological and environmental factors influence early network formation, cellular differentiation, maturation, and functional connectivity in these advanced model systems.
Applicants should have a BSc and MSc in Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or related fields, with hands-on experience in cell culture, omics approaches, or molecular biology. Basic programming skills (Python or R) or a willingness to learn are required. Fluency in English is essential, while German language skills are advantageous for interactions outside the laboratory. The ideal candidate is a motivated, reliable scientist with strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and an enthusiastic team player.
Constructor University offers a supportive and international research environment, flexible working hours, individual onboarding and development planning, and access to campus amenities including dining, recreation, and corporate fitness programs. The university is committed to sustainability and diversity, providing equal opportunities to all qualified applicants.
