The project supports the creation of highly realistic human and animal avatars for research, film, virtual reality, biology, and medicine, leveraging unique 3D and 4D capture facilities, machine learning, computer vision, and advanced graphics to model shape and behavior.
The doctoral researcher will be co-supervised by Assistant Professor Xucong Zhang (Delft University of Technology) and Dr. Senya Polikovsky (MPI‑IS), with additional support from Dr. Keiko Kitagawa. The role involves developing and enhancing multi-camera capture systems for eye movements, including gaze, mutual gaze, and blinks. Responsibilities include hardware system creation, study design, data collection, and the development of cutting-edge gaze estimation and blink detection algorithms in collaboration with TU Delft. The researcher will also work with psychology experts to adapt and improve systems for specific case studies.
This position is funded by the DFG SPP Programme Understanding Gaze (UGaze SPP 2481) and is affiliated with both the School of SPP Programme and the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS‑IS). The successful candidate will spend time working on-site in Delft with Prof. Zhang. The project offers a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment with access to international scientists, engineers, and administrative staff.
