About this position

This PhD position is part of the CATALOOP doctoral network, hosted at Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel and co-supervised with Technische Universität Chemnitz, Germany. The project focuses on 'Designing new modular ligands to address old selectivity challenges' within the broader aim of developing data-driven workflows for stereoselective catalysis. The CATALOOP network brings together leading academic and industrial partners across seven European countries, offering interdisciplinary training in both experimental and computational chemistry.

As a doctoral candidate, you will conduct research in synthetic molecular chemistry and data-driven asymmetric catalysis, actively participate in the network's governance, and contribute to teaching activities. The project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Networks, providing a competitive salary and allowances according to MSCA rules, with funding secured until September 2026 and a planned extension to September 2028.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry or a related field, with strong expertise in organic and/or organometallic synthesis and catalysis. Experience with NMR analysis and synthetic chemistry under inert gas is advantageous. High proficiency in English is required. Eligibility is subject to MSCA mobility rules: candidates must not have resided in Germany or Israel for more than 12 months in the past three years and must not already hold a PhD.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at BGU and spend time at both BGU and TU Chemnitz, benefiting from dual supervision by Prof. Dr. Anat Milo and Prof. Dr. Johannes Teichert. The network offers opportunities for secondments with industrial partners, enhancing practical skills and employability in both academic and industrial settings.

To apply, send your CV (including two referees), academic transcript, and a motivation letter to [email protected] and [email protected], using the subject format 'Candidate name — CATALOOP'. For further information, consult the supervisors or the network manager at [email protected]. The application deadline is January 6, 2026, and the position starts February 1, 2026.

What's required

Applicants must hold a completed scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in chemistry or a comparable discipline, with sound specialist knowledge in organic and/or organometallic synthesis and catalysis. Experience in the analysis of organic compounds, especially NMR methods, and synthetic molecular chemistry under inert gas is advantageous. High proficiency in English is required. Candidates must not have lived in Germany or Israel for more than 12 months combined in the three years before the contract start, and must not have obtained a PhD elsewhere. Usual application documents include CV (with two referees), academic transcript, and a short motivation letter.
