About this position

The Environmental Chemistry Group at ETH Zürich, within the Department of Environmental Systems Science, is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the environmental chemistry of biodegradable polymers. This research group is internationally recognized for its work on the fate and transformation of synthetic biodegradable polymers in various environments, including aquatic systems, soils, and wastewater. The group’s research is highly interdisciplinary, combining advanced analytical chemistry, polymer science, microbiology, and environmental science to address pressing sustainability challenges.

The PhD project aims to advance the understanding of the biodegradability of water-soluble polymers, which are widely used in cosmetics, home care, and agricultural products. These polymers enter engineered and natural environments through diverse pathways, and their breakdown and complete microbial utilization are essential for preventing persistent pollution and supporting a circular polymer economy. The research will investigate both enzymatic and abiotic degradation mechanisms, the uptake of breakdown products by microbial cells, and their subsequent metabolic conversion to carbon dioxide and biomass. The project will account for the interplay between polymer chemistry and environmental characteristics such as soil, aquatic systems, and sludge.

As a PhD student, you will conduct systematic laboratory assessments of polymer breakdown, characterize the resulting products, and use respirometric analysis to quantify conversion rates. You will establish quantitative relationships between polymer structure and biodegradability, utilizing advanced analytical techniques including mass spectrometry and stable isotope tracing. The project is part of a larger academic–industry collaboration, involving partners at ETH Zürich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in organic or polymer chemistry, environmental chemistry or sciences, environmental microbiology, carbon biogeochemistry, or closely related fields. Proficiency in English is required. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, open to new ideas and technologies, and able to work effectively in a collaborative, international research environment. Interest in sustainability science and mentoring junior students is encouraged.

The workplace is split between ETH Zürich’s city center campus and Eawag in Dübendorf.
