About this position
The School of Life Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is offering a PhD position in enzyme-based peptide synthesis within the Institute for Chemistry and Bioanalytics. The Shahgaldian group focuses on developing enzyme-based functional systems at the interface of (nano)chemistry, biocatalysis, and protein science, addressing pharmaceutical research challenges using synthetic chemistry, bioconjugate chemistry, nanotechnology, and enzyme engineering approaches.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the University of Basel and will engage in research activities such as designing and implementing enzyme-based strategies for peptide synthesis, conducting experimental work in synthetic and analytical chemistry, and contributing to the optimization and evaluation of engineered enzymes. Additional responsibilities include teaching, supervision, and preparation of scientific publications and conference presentations.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field, with hands-on experience in synthetic chemistry. A strong interest in protein science and biocatalysis, experience with molecular biology, protein (bio)chemistry, or peptide synthesis, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural team are required. Proficiency in English is essential, and German is advantageous.
The FHNW School of Life Sciences provides state-of-the-art technical, laboratory, and office facilities, a highly motivating working environment, and opportunities for collaboration with companies and institutions in Switzerland and abroad. The school is committed to equal opportunities and work-life compatibility.
To apply, candidates should submit their documents via the FHNW online job portal. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Patrick Shahgaldian, Lecturer in Molecular Nanotechnology. The position is open immediately, and the workplace is Muttenz, Switzerland.
