The PhD position in History is part of the project Campus Total Defence Upper Norrland, focusing on the Arctic region of Scandinavia, particularly northern Sweden. The research subject of history at LTU often participates in interdisciplinary initiatives aimed at addressing important societal challenges. As a doctoral student, you will join a dynamic network of researchers from various disciplines, specializing in total defence issues in the Arctic. You will be affiliated with the research schools Campus Total Defence Upper Norrland (CTF ÖN) and Natural Resources for Sustainable Societal Transformation (SUN).

The subject of history at LTU emphasizes the study of humans as social beings, focusing on the development, organization, and change of societies over time. Research specializes in the history of technology at the interface of natural resources, humans, and the environment, examining both the impact of technology on society and how humans have influenced technological development.

The doctoral project addresses the urgent societal issue of total defence, with a focus on the Arctic part of Scandinavia. The Arctic's growing importance for security, preparedness, and total defence is driven by global geopolitical tensions, climate change, demand for natural resources, and the region's geostrategic significance. These developments place new demands on total defence in northern Sweden and neighboring countries, echoing similar conditions in recent history.

As a doctoral student, your duties will include both theoretical and practical work. You will be trained in scholarly research through the publication of a monograph or scientific articles and participation in national and international conferences. Mandatory and elective doctoral courses, as well as activities organized within the CTF ÖN and SUN research schools, are part of the program. Teaching experience may also be offered.

Employment as a PhD student is limited to four years, with the possibility of teaching and other departmental duties up to 20%. The position starts in June 2026 and is based at Luleå University of Technology. Funding is provided as a salaried position according to university regulations.

Applicants must have general entry qualifications for postgraduate education, including a completed degree at advanced level, at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at advanced level), or equivalent knowledge. Additionally, at least 120 higher education credits in history are required, with at least 30 at advanced level including independent work of at least 15 credits. Very good oral and written communication skills in Swedish and English are required. Merits include coursework or research relevant to the project, strong grounding in historical theory and methods, interdisciplinary interest, collaborative skills, and initiative.
