About this position
This fully funded, four-year PhD position at ETH Zürich is embedded within the Professorship of Architecture and Human Augmentation, offering a unique opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of human–computer interaction (HCI), extended reality (XR), and architectural design and fabrication. The research aims to explore how interactive computational tools, XR, and robotic systems can augment human agency in architectural production, focusing on interfaces, feedback systems, and embodied interaction to bridge design intent, material behaviour, and robotic execution across design-to-fabrication workflows.
Key research streams include developing tools and workflows for efficient assessment of discarded materials, creating a digital inventory of reclaimed components, computational representations of assembly and disassembly processes, and establishing robust pipelines linking inventories to CAD models. As a PhD candidate, you will conduct original research, design and run studies, develop and evaluate prototypes, analyze data, and disseminate results through publications and presentations. Collaboration with the research team and partners, contribution to lab life, and support for teaching and student supervision are integral parts of the role.
Applicants should hold an architectural or advanced technical degree (FHEQ Level 7), demonstrate strong programming skills (preferably in Python and C#), and be proficient in 3D modelling environments and XR software. Experience with Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Unity, robotic fabrication, digital fabrication, or human–robot interaction is highly desirable. Familiarity with XR technologies, UX development, or experimental prototyping is an asset. Fluency in English is required.
ETH Zürich offers access to state-of-the-art computational, XR, and robotic fabrication infrastructure, close collaboration with researchers across architecture, robotics, computer science, and engineering, and professional development and networking opportunities. The university values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and nurturing a respectful working and learning environment.
Applications are accepted exclusively via the ETH Zurich Job Board. Required documents include a letter of motivation, CV and portfolio, and two reference letters. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with an intended start date of August 1, 2026. For informal enquiries, contact Fabio Scotto at [email protected] (no applications by email or post). Pre-selection is carried out by responsible recruiters.
