Description

This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology focuses on the design of interaction synchrony with soft robotics, situated within the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The research aims to explore how movement and touch should be experienced in future technologies, such as robots in healthcare and exoskeletons for mobility assistance. The doctoral candidate will contribute to the ERC-funded project “Intimate Touch: Developing Interaction Design Knowledge and Materials where Technology Touches the Body” and the Digital Futures project “Redefining Mobility for Ageing Adults.” The work will involve designing for touch and movement using new materials, guided by somatic design principles and striving for 'interactional synchrony'—a deep, meaningful alignment between the human body and moving materials. The candidate will work with soft robotics and haptic technologies to design, develop, and study fully realized applications in real-world settings. The research combines careful attention to the sensations and emotions arising from material interaction with a critical, feminist perspective on how bodies are recognized in design. Supervision will be provided by Professor Madeline Balaam and Universitetslektor Marianela Ciolfi Felice. The position offers the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies in a dynamic, international research environment, collaborating with industry and leading universities worldwide. Employment is full-time for up to four years, with a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student agreement. The position is based in Stockholm, Sweden. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction or a related field, or have completed at least 240 ECTS credits (with at least 60 at the advanced level), or possess equivalent knowledge. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is required. Selection criteria include the ability to work independently, collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, and demonstrate analytical and professional skills. Experience with creative and playful design methods, critical/feminist theory, and physical prototyping is valued. Application: Apply via the KTH recruitment system by December 4, 2025. Required documents include a CV, cover letter, degree certificates and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and representative publications or technical reports. Translations to English or Swedish are required if documents are in other languages. The position is full-time, with a start date by agreement. KTH is committed to equality, diversity, and good working conditions. The university is a leading international technical institution, actively contributing to a sustainable society through education, research, and innovation.
