About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Trinity College Dublin offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of machine learning and functional neural imaging. Hosted by the School of Computer Science and Statistics and the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, the project leverages state-of-the-art imaging facilities, including a Siemens 3T PRISMA MRI and an OPM-MEG scanner, to advance our understanding of human brain function.

The doctoral research will focus on developing innovative neural network architectures specifically designed for fMRI and MEG neuroimaging data. The aim is to uncover mechanistic principles that link spatiotemporal brain dynamics to mental and cognitive functions, and to translate these insights into robust, interpretable, and generalisable functional markers. These markers are intended to form the basis for clinically deployable tools supporting patient stratification, prognosis, and treatment monitoring.

The position is fully funded, providing a stipend of €25,000 per annum and a fees write-down (for both EU and non-EU students) for four years as part of a Structured PhD programme. The anticipated start date is September 2026.

Applicants must hold at least a 2.1 honors (or equivalent) undergraduate degree and a distinction (or equivalent) MSc degree. Only candidates with a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science (excluding computer engineering) will be considered. Good English language proficiency is required, and proof must be provided if applicable.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Mimi Zhang (primary supervisor) and two additional professors from the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering access to cutting-edge technology and expertise in neuroscience, machine learning, and statistical modeling.

To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts, proof of English language qualifications (if required), and the names of two academic referees to [email protected]. The application deadline is 1 May 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in the week of 4th May and invited for interview in the week of 18th May.

For more information, visit the School of Computer Science and Statistics or Dr. Zhang's academic profile. The official position listing is available on Euraxess.
