About this position

The ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research at the University of Bern is offering a 3-4 year PhD position in Machine Learning and Ocular Biomechanics, starting May/June 2026. This opportunity is part of an SNSF-funded project in collaboration with EPFL, University of Basel, and Bern University Hospital (Inselspital). The successful candidate will join the Computational Bioengineering Group (CBE), which focuses on developing experimental and computational methods in biomechanics to address clinically relevant problems, particularly in the context of vision and corneal biomechanics.

The project aims to develop patient-specific biomechanical models of the cornea, integrating machine learning to understand how corneal biomechanics influence visual outcomes and support prediction, treatment, and planning of refractive interventions for patients with severe visual impairment. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, involving engineers, clinicians, and data scientists, and offers close clinical interaction with real-world data access.

Key research areas include machine learning, ocular biomechanics, computational bioengineering, finite element analysis, and medical image analysis. The group’s expertise spans finite element modeling, experimental tissue characterization, and data-driven methods for new diagnostic approaches and surgical planning. The position offers a competitive SNSF salary, Swiss social benefits, free German language courses, and opportunities for publication and conference participation.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or applied mathematics, with experience in computer vision, machine learning, Python programming, mechanics, and computational methods. Finite element analysis experience and prior work in a medical regulatory environment are strong assets. Strong English communication skills are required. Application documents include a CV with references, motivation letter, and abstract of the Master’s thesis. The application deadline is February 15, 2026. For more information, visit the ARTORG Center and CBE group websites or contact Prof. Philippe Büchler at [email protected].
