About this position

Reykjavik University is offering a fully funded PhD position in machine learning, forecasting, and time series analysis within the Department of Engineering. The project is supported by the LUMI AI Factory (EuroHPC) and focuses on scalable AI-for-science workflows using GPU-accelerated computing. The research centers on time-series analysis and forecasting, leveraging transformer-based foundation models, including inverted transformers, to develop practical solutions for the manufacturing industry.

The project aims to capitalize on advances in large-language models (LLMs), applying their second-mover advantage to time-series prediction. This includes opportunities for duplicating and fine-tuning foundation models to address specific needs, as well as exploring innovative approaches such as chain-of-thought reasoning tokens for enhanced model interpretability. The integration of exogenous variables, both historic and future, is a key aspect, moving beyond traditional forecasting methods.

Research activities will involve training models on large and synthetic datasets, with the goal of producing easily fine-tunable models capable of classification, forecasting, imputation, and anomaly detection. The project emphasizes interpretability and practical application in critical industries, particularly manufacturing.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with strong analytical, problem-solving, and programming skills. Proficiency in English and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Application materials include a cover letter, CV, two letters of recommendation or referee contacts, certified diplomas and transcripts, and any relevant publications or thesis.

The position is based at Reykjavik University, a centrally located institution in Iceland’s capital, known for its interdisciplinary collaboration, strong industry ties, and international outlook. Iceland offers a high quality of life, safety, and a vibrant cultural environment. The position is open until filled, with applications reviewed starting March 1, 2026.
