Radboud University’s Donders Centre for Cognition is offering a fully funded PhD position in the network neuroscience of language, as part of the ERC Consolidator Project EMERGENCE. The project aims to explore how language arises from large-scale brain networks, moving beyond classical localisationist models to investigate network-level mechanisms using advanced neuroimaging techniques such as structural MRI, diffusion-weighted imaging, and fMRI. The research will focus on individual variability in language organisation across both healthy and clinical populations, employing advanced connectomics and receptor-enriched modelling.

The successful candidate will contribute to data preprocessing, advanced analysis, tractography, and network modelling, implementing computational approaches to uncover latent dimensions of language network organisation. The role involves participation in international collaborations, dissemination of findings through publications and conferences, and limited teaching duties (approximately 10% of working time), such as supervising theses and assisting in tutorials or guest lectures.

Supervision will be provided by Dr Stephanie Forkel (PI) and senior researchers at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The candidate will join the Donders Graduate School and the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Language Sciences, benefiting from structured interdisciplinary training, advanced methodological courses, and a vibrant international doctoral community.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, computational linguistics, biomedical engineering, data science, or a related field. Essential skills include strong quantitative and analytical abilities, experience in neuroimaging and brain network analysis, and proficiency in programming or data analysis (Python, MATLAB, R, FSL). Excellent English language skills are required. Desirable qualifications include prior experience with MRI or neuroimaging data, Python-based scientific computing, familiarity with multivariate methods, network analysis or machine learning, and an interest in language, cognition, and individual variability in brain organisation.

The position offers a temporary full-time contract (1.0 FTE) for 1.5 years, extendable to 4 years upon positive evaluation. The starting salary is €3,059 per month, rising to €3,881 by the fourth year, with additional benefits such as an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, 30–41 days of annual leave, flexible working hours, remote work options, sports and cultural discounts, and a good pension plan.
