About this position
The Department of Cellular Neurobiology at Technische Universität Braunschweig is offering a funded PhD position as part of the interdisciplinary BrightBrain research initiative. This flagship project integrates neurobiology, engineering, computer science, and physics to develop advanced precision technologies for biomedical research, focusing on neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. The research will utilize microfluidics, microphotonics, and silicon-based microtechnology to enable minimally invasive investigations under physiologically relevant conditions, supporting mechanistic studies of neurodegenerative diseases and the development of personalized therapeutic strategies.
The successful candidate will investigate the mechanisms underlying neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration using advanced in vitro and in vivo model systems. The project aims to determine how immune activation and cellular stress modulate neuroinflammatory signaling and microglia-astrocyte communication via metabolic and inflammatory pathways, with a central objective to elucidate how these interactions impact neuronal health, network integrity, and functional stability. State-of-the-art imaging technologies will be applied throughout the research.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Immunology, or related fields. Experience in cell culture, organoids, molecular biology, and/or imaging techniques is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate strong motivation for interdisciplinary research, excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and very good written and spoken English.
The position is fully funded under the German federal pay scale (TV-L E13, 65%) and includes comprehensive social benefits such as health insurance and 30 days of paid vacation. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research infrastructure, supervision within a strong interdisciplinary network, and excellent opportunities for scientific collaboration and career development in a supportive and inclusive environment.
The starting date is April 1, 2026 (negotiable), with a contract duration of three years. The application deadline is March 8, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of two academic references via email to Dr. Shirin Hosseini ([email protected]). Online interviews will be scheduled after application review.
