About this position

This PhD position is offered within the Infection Medicine Research Group at Lund University, led by Dr. Johan Malmström. The group is dedicated to advancing proteomics methods to enable precision medicine approaches for sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

The team comprises senior researchers, postdocs, and PhD students with expertise spanning clinical medicine, cell and molecular biology, proteomics, and bioinformatics. The group fosters a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment, emphasizing job satisfaction, development, and active participation. The PhD project integrates immunological insights with systems biology and consists of three main parts: (1) evaluating proteomic changes induced by molecular substances to identify new drug candidates for sepsis treatment; (2) investigating immune cell metabolic processes and immunological stimulations by examining temporal proteomic changes during immune responses; and (3) combining these findings with novel patient stratification methods to support data-driven precision medicine in sepsis.

The position is full-time (100%) and is expected to start on January 1, 2026, or as agreed. Lund University offers employees benefits such as generous annual leave and an occupational pension scheme. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in biomedicine or equivalent, with documented experience in large-scale quantitative and functional proteomics, cell sample preparation, and strong skills in data analysis using R and bioinformatics. Additional merits include experience in cell model screening, pathway enrichment analysis, understanding sepsis pathophysiology, drug development strategies, working with human blood, ELISA, Mesoscale, and proficiency in Swedish.

Eligibility for third-cycle studies requires a second-cycle degree or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (60 at second-cycle level), or equivalent knowledge. The doctoral studentship is regulated by Swedish law, with a four-year tenure and salary plus benefits. Applications should be submitted via the university’s recruitment system and must include a CV, personal letter, degree certificate, and supporting documents.

What's required

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in biomedicine or an equivalent field. Documented experience in large-scale quantitative and functional proteomics, sample preparation of cells for quantitative proteomics, and strong skills in quantitative proteomics data analysis using R and bioinformatics are required. A solid understanding of mitochondrial functions and cellular metabolism, as well as experience in cell culture, is necessary. Merits include experience in screening molecules in cell models, pathway enrichment analyses (e.g., Metascape), understanding of sepsis pathophysiology, drug development and repurposing strategies, working with human blood, ELISA and Mesoscale, and proficiency in Swedish (spoken and written). Eligibility for third-cycle studies requires a second-cycle degree or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (60 at second-cycle level), or equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.

How to apply

Submit your application via Lund University's recruitment system. Include a CV, personal letter, degree certificate or equivalent, and any supporting documents such as grade transcripts, referee details, and letters of recommendation.
