About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain, is offering a fully funded PhD position in its Structural Engineering Laboratory, specifically within the Advanced Structural Materials and Systems (ASMS) research group. This four-year project, conducted in collaboration with ETH Zurich and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), focuses on the innovative application of shape memory alloys (SMAs) for the interlaminar reinforcement of laminated fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) using prestressed Z-pins.

The successful candidate will contribute to the fundamental understanding and quantitative assessment of SMA Z-pins as an efficient solution for through-thickness reinforcement of FRPs. Research activities will include the design and manufacturing of SMA Z-pinned FRPs, SMA activation and micromechanical modeling, progressive damage modeling of reinforced FRPs, and mechanical characterization and fracture experiments. The position offers joint supervision by Empa and ETH Zurich, providing access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational infrastructure.

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline, with a strong background in mechanics of materials and finite element analysis. Experience in fracture mechanics, SMA reinforcements, FRP manufacturing, and mechanical experiments is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required, while knowledge of German is considered an asset.

Empa offers attractive employment conditions, a collegial working atmosphere, and competitive salary and social benefits. The research environment is dynamic, nationally and internationally oriented, and committed to inclusion and respect. The position is available by mutual agreement, with a latest start date of August 2026.
