The University of Twente is offering a fully funded PhD position in Software Security within the Semantics, Cybersecurity and Services (SCS) group. The research focuses on developing automated techniques for analyzing, exploiting, and patching software vulnerabilities, particularly after their detection. The project is part of the NWO-funded HIVA initiative, which aims to holistically analyze infrastructure-centric vulnerabilities, assess their causes and risks, and prioritize critical issues for effective mitigation. Unlike traditional approaches, this research considers infrastructures as a whole, enabling prompt and cost-effective solutions.

The SCS group is internationally recognized for its work in systems, AI, and data security, and provides a collaborative and supportive environment. PhD candidates are expected to conduct high-quality research, publish in top security conferences, and develop open-source prototypes. The position offers opportunities for international exchanges, conference participation, and visits to other research institutes.

Applicants should have or be nearing completion of an MSc in computer science or a closely related field, with excellent grades. Required skills include strong programming abilities in C/C++, a solid background in systems and software security, and familiarity with fuzzing, static analysis, and symbolic execution. Candidates should be motivated, creative, independent, and possess excellent analytical and communication skills. Fluency in English and a collaborative spirit are essential.

The position is fully funded for four years, with a gross monthly salary starting at €3,059 and rising to €3,881. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, flexible work arrangements, generous leave, free sports facilities, and parental leave.
