About this position

The University of Vaasa invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term PhD position as Project Researcher in the field of energy technology, focusing on the modeling of building secondary heating networks and geothermal systems. The position is based in the School of Technology and Innovations, within the Renewable Energy and Built Environment research group, and is part of Finland’s leading energy technology hub. The appointment is expected to start in March 2026 (or as agreed) and will conclude in December 2026.

The successful candidate will join a diverse and international research team, contributing to the development of advanced models for secondary heating networks in buildings, including domestic hot water, space heating, and ventilation systems. A central challenge is the accurate modeling of return water temperatures in systems with variable mass flow rates. The project also involves modeling a geothermal heating system that supplies heat to these networks, supplemented by a local district heating network. The system includes a ground source heat pump and three 300 m deep boreholes, requiring on-site measurements for data collection due to limited existing documentation.

Key responsibilities include developing validated simulation models using TRNSYS and/or IDA ICE software, with all tasks detailed in the Annual Work Plan. The annual working time is 1612 hours. The research may also incorporate machine learning techniques, such as artificial neural networks, for modeling heating demands and return water temperatures. Experience with MATLAB/Simulink is considered advantageous.

Applicants should hold (or be near completion of) a Master’s degree in Building, Energy Technology, or Construction Technology, with strong academic performance. Required skills include modeling and control of building-level district heating substations and geothermal heating systems. Preferred qualifications include experience with TRNSYS/IDA ICE, machine learning, and optionally MATLAB/Simulink. Proficiency in English and physical presence in Finland are mandatory.

The position offers a monthly salary based on Finnish University Salary System job demand levels 2-4 (€2281-2844), with an additional personal salary component based on performance. The University of Vaasa provides a supportive, international work environment, flexible arrangements, comprehensive occupational health services, and employee benefits. The campus is located by the sea, offering modern workspaces and a vibrant academic community.

To apply, submit your application and required annexes (CV, cover letter, transcript, list of publications) via the University of Vaasa online application system by 31 March 2026. For further information, contact Professor Xiaoshu Lu ([email protected]). For application system inquiries, contact [email protected]. More details and instructions are available on the university’s open positions webpage.
