About this position
The Helmholtz Zentrum Munich is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the neural basis of metabolic adaptations at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) in Leipzig. This interdisciplinary project aims to dissect the molecular and cellular heterogeneity of brain circuits, investigating how specific neuronal populations and their microenvironments respond to metabolic challenges and influence systemic metabolism. The successful candidate will utilize state-of-the-art molecular profiling technologies and integrate molecular insights with physiological data to uncover novel mechanisms underlying the central control of adipose tissue functions and the development of metabolic disorders.
As a PhD student, you will participate in research activities centered on the neural control of metabolism and adipose tissue function, collaborate with a diverse team, contribute to high-impact publications, and present findings at national and international scientific meetings. The position provides access to advanced infrastructure and core facilities, scientific training through the Helmholtz Munich Graduate School, career counseling, and comprehensive in-house development opportunities. International staff services are available to support relocation and integration in Germany, and employees benefit from 30 days annual leave, flexi days, and public holidays.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, with demonstrable experience in molecular biology techniques, animal models, or metabolic research. A strong interest in neuroscience and obesity research, high personal initiative, independent problem-solving skills, and excellent English proficiency are required. International candidates must provide a Statement of Comparability for Foreign Higher Education Qualifications if their degree was obtained abroad.
Remuneration and social security benefits are based on the German Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees at Federal Level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund), with the possibility of an additional allowance if applicable. The position is fixed-term for three years. Applications are accepted year-round and should be submitted via the online application tool, including a CV, cover letter, degree certificates, and contact details for at least two referees. For further information or questions, contact Dr. Alexander Jais at [email protected].
The Helmholtz Zentrum Munich is committed to diversity and welcomes applications from talented individuals regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion, or age. Qualified applicants with physical disabilities will be given preference.
