Leiden University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) and Faculty of Science invite applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on advancing a systems perspective on wellbeing using input-output analysis. This research aims to move beyond GDP as a measure of societal progress by integrating both ecological and social impacts within planetary boundaries. The project will utilize the new global MARIO input-output database to link economic activity to a comprehensive set of wellbeing indicators, including production-side factors (work hours, labour conditions, gender and income equality, early mortality) and consumption-side factors (needs satisfaction, essential energy use, life expectancy). Additionally, survey data will be leveraged to analyze wellbeing aspects beyond the formal production-consumption sphere, such as leisure time, unpaid work, and social relationships, providing a holistic overview of wellbeing across society.

The successful candidate will identify gaps in current socio-ecological transition frameworks and explore pathways for achieving wellbeing throughout society, contributing to the development of beyond GDP indicators essential for socially just climate policy. The project also involves linking national totals to European household consumption and subnational data, enabling analysis of demographic and regional variations in wellbeing. This research is positioned to offer critical insights into how wellbeing can be achieved within and beyond the production-consumption sphere, supporting necessary socio-ecological transitions to remain within planetary boundaries.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Industrial Ecology, Ecological Economics, Geography), possess strong programming skills for data analysis (Python or R preferred), and have experience with input-output analysis. A strong interest in wellbeing and beyond GDP research is essential, as is proficiency in English. Knowledge of statistical and spatial analysis methods is required or a willingness to learn.
