PhD Position: The (Mis)Perception of Social Norms in Dynamic Social Networks Utrecht University in Netherlands

This PhD position at Utrecht University investigates the (mis)perception of social norms in dynamic social networks, with a particular focus on climate change mitigation. Hosted by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the project aims to understand how social norms develop and are perceived within contexts where norms are not easily observed, and how misperceptions can contribute to societal fragmentation and group separation.

The research combines agent-based modelling and experimental methods to analyze the joint development of social networks and norms, especially regarding climate change topics. The successful candidate will formalize theories using agent-based models and conduct both lab and field experiments, depending on project progress. The project is embedded in the SOCION consortium, which addresses societal fragmentation and polarization, collaborating across disciplines such as psychology, social history, demography, philosophy, and sociology, as well as with civic organizations.

During the PhD, you will gain expertise in theory-driven empirical sociology, learn to derive hypotheses from deductive theoretical reasoning, develop strong data analysis and critical thinking skills, and grow into an independent scientist. You will contribute to a collaborative and respectful research environment within the Department of Sociology, the interdisciplinary SOCION programme, and the interuniversity research school ICS.

Applicants should have an MA/MSc degree in sociology or a closely related field, professional competence in English, advanced statistical skills, and ideally programming skills. Interest in psychology, social cohesion, climate policies, and interdisciplinary research is essential. The position offers a one-year contract with extension to four years upon successful assessment, a working week of 36–40 hours, and a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881 (full-time), plus 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment terms.
