About this position
The Biometrics & Image Perception Lab (BIPLAB) at the School of Automation Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, is seeking highly motivated PhD students. The lab specializes in cutting-edge research at the intersection of computer vision, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence, with a strong emphasis on biometric recognition. Key research areas include face recognition, gait recognition, and multimodal biometrics. Students will have the opportunity to work on high-impact research problems in biometrics and human-centered AI, supported by a collaborative lab culture and experienced researchers.
Lab members benefit from access to state-of-the-art GPU servers, large-scale datasets, and institutional research resources. The group encourages publication in top-tier conferences and journals such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, TPAMI, TIFS, PR, TIM, and EAAI, and offers opportunities for collaboration with international research groups and industry partners. Mentorship is provided to help students develop into independent researchers and future academic leaders.
Applicants should be enthusiastic about biometrics, computer vision, and deep learning, and possess strong programming skills (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch preferred). Creativity, curiosity, and motivation to solve challenging real-world problems and publish high-quality research are essential. Candidates should have a solid academic background in Computer Science, AI, or related fields. Possible research topics include robust mask-invariant and low-resolution face recognition, various gait recognition methods, and cross-architecture knowledge distillation for biometrics.
To apply, candidates should send their CV, academic transcripts, a brief statement of research interests, and links to publications or GitHub (if available) to [email protected]. For more information, visit the lab's LinkedIn page or contact Dr. Saad Shakeel directly.
