About this position

The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability, is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the field of biopolymer materials and polymer science. The positions are part of the Particle and Fiber Technology research group, led by Professor Wenwen Fang. The group focuses on extracting and isolating bio-based polymers such as cellulose and proteins from renewable feedstocks and waste streams, aiming to develop sustainable processes for converting these materials into high-performance fibers and functional materials.

Position 1 centers on the development and optimization of biopolymer-based fiber spinning processes, including lab setup and supervision of Bachelor/Master students. Research will focus on sustainable high-performance fibers, with opportunities to contribute to lab development, teaching, and innovative research. Position 2 is focused on fundamental polymer and cellulose science, exploring structure dynamics in cellulose and advancing the understanding of supramolecular structure and dynamics in biomaterials. The research topics are flexible, allowing candidates to bring their own ideas within the scope of bio-based fiber materials.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in polymer science, chemistry, materials science, materials engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with cellulose or biopolymer processing, fiber spinning, extrusion, and characterization methods such as GPC and NMR is advantageous. Strong communication skills in English are required, and practical, hands-on skills for laboratory setup and management are highly valued. Basic knowledge in mechanical engineering or experience with fiber spinning equipment is also beneficial.
