About this position

The PhD programme in Buddhist Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München offers an interdisciplinary research environment for the study of Buddhism in its historical, cultural, and social contexts. Hosted by the Centre for Buddhist Studies, the programme draws on expertise from the departments of Chinese Studies, Indian and Tibetan Studies, Japanese Studies, Study of Religions, and Philosophy of Religion. Students benefit from a structured, research-oriented curriculum designed for completion in three to four years, with flexibility for part-time study if needed.

Participants can write their dissertations in either German or English, and supervision meetings are available in both languages. All mandatory events, colloquia, and workshops are conducted in English, while optional courses are mostly in German. The programme includes intensive supervision, opportunities for conference and teaching experience, and support for personal skills development through the LMU GraduateCenter. International elements such as guest lecturers, specialist literature in various languages, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad enrich the academic experience.

Applicants must hold an excellent degree in Buddhist studies, study of religions, (Asian) cultural studies, or (Asian) philosophy. In exceptional cases, candidates with an outstanding BA degree may be considered. Language requirements include proficiency in English, and depending on the dissertation topic, German (or willingness to study German intensively) and an Asian language relevant to Buddhist studies. The programme is open to both full-time and part-time students, with the duration adjusted accordingly.

There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of 85 EUR plus an additional fee for the Deutschlandticket is required. Funding opportunities within the university include the LMU Travel Grant and LMU Completion Grant. The cost of living in Munich is estimated at 1,000-1,200 EUR per month, and the International Office provides support for accommodation and integration for international students and doctoral candidates.

Applications are accepted until 1 June for an October start and 1 December for an April start. Late applications may be considered for the next available semester. For more information and to apply, visit the programme's application portal or contact the International Office for support with accommodation and integration.
