The PhD Programme in Buddhist Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München offers an interdisciplinary research environment for the study of Buddhism in its historical, cultural, and social contexts. Hosted by the Centre for Buddhist Studies, the programme brings together faculty from Chinese Studies, Indian and Tibetan Studies, Japanese Studies, Study of Religions, and Philosophy of Religion, providing a rich academic landscape for doctoral research.

Doctoral candidates can write their dissertations in either German or English, and supervision meetings are available in both languages. All mandatory events, colloquia, and workshops are conducted in English, while optional courses are mostly in German. The programme is structured as a three-year, research-oriented curriculum, with flexibility for part-time study if required. Intensive supervision, conference and teaching experience, and administrative support are integral parts of the programme, with additional personal skills development offered by the LMU GraduateCenter.

International elements include guest lecturers, specialist literature in various languages, language training, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad. The programme is designed to foster international comparisons and thematic reference to the global context of Buddhist studies.

There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of 85 EUR plus an additional fee for the Deutschlandticket is required. Living costs in Munich are estimated at 1,000-1,200 EUR per month. Funding opportunities within the university include the LMU Travel Grant and LMU Completion Grant, supporting doctoral candidates throughout their studies.

Applicants must have an excellent academic degree in Buddhist studies, study of religions, (Asian) cultural studies, or (Asian) philosophy. In exceptional cases, an excellent BA degree may be accepted. Language requirements include sufficient knowledge of English, and depending on the dissertation project, German (or willingness to study German intensively) and an Asian language relevant to Buddhist studies.

The application deadlines are 1 June for an October start and 1 December for an April start. Applications should be submitted online via the programme's application portal. The International Office provides support for accommodation and integration, and rooms in shared flats are available on the private market at 400-600 EUR per month.
