About this position

The PhD programme in Geoscience at the University of Göttingen offers a comprehensive research-oriented doctoral education, focusing on three main areas: coupled processes among the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere; dynamics and transport processes of the lithosphere; and coupled processes in georeservoirs. Students investigate geological, mineralogical, crystallographic, and biological processes in mineral and rock formation, as well as mass transfer at geological and biological interfaces. The programme also explores volcanic eruptions, magma reservoir dynamics, geochemical composition, isotopic tracers, and the development of geological reservoirs for applications such as geothermal energy and energy storage.

Doctoral candidates participate in externally funded projects, gaining experience in independent scientific work and contributing to the scientific community of the faculty and Geoscience Centre. The curriculum is structured around individual research (160 ECTS for dissertation and defence) and coursework (20 ECTS), including a compulsory theory and methods course and three electives covering research reflection, scientific communication, teaching, and key competencies. Students have flexibility in course selection each semester.

Courses are primarily taught in English (75%) and German (25%), with no tuition fees. A semester contribution of approximately 400 EUR covers regional transport and other student benefits. Living costs in Göttingen are modest, averaging about 850 EUR per month. The university provides support for accommodation, part-time employment, and career development, including workshops, online modules, and start-up support for entrepreneurial students. International students receive assistance with registration and general services.

Applicants must secure confirmation from a potential supervisor in the Faculty of Geoscience and Geography and demonstrate English proficiency through recognized certificates or graduation from an English-language programme. Detailed admission regulations and application procedures are available on the course website. No internal funding is provided, so students must plan for living expenses and semester fees. The programme begins in both winter and summer semesters, and students are encouraged to contact the Accommodation Service early due to limited housing options.
