The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Germany, offers an international and interdisciplinary PhD programme in International Development Studies (IDS). This three-year, full-time programme is designed for excellent young academics from around the world who are passionate about advancing their careers in international development and cross-disciplinary research. The programme is embedded within the RUB Research School, recognized for excellence, and is delivered in cooperation with the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Sciences, and Economics.

Courses are taught entirely in English, and the programme begins each November. Annually, five to eight candidates are admitted, each assigned a supervisor holding a professorial post in one of the participating faculties. The curriculum includes tailor-made seminars covering developmental issues from multidisciplinary perspectives, such as development economics, political institutions, conflict and democracy, and economics and culture. These are complemented by courses on research methods, statistical analysis, and generic skills like scientific writing and professional communication.

The programme cycle spans three years, including a field research phase typically in the fourth semester. Students work on individual research projects and participate in regular meetings of the IEE Research Clusters, where projects are presented and discussed. The IDS programme also offers international elements, including joint PhD opportunities with Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS), field research abroad, and cooperation with the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

Funding is available through two GSSP scholarships per intake, the Deutschlandstipendium grant (300 EUR/month for one year), and graduation grants for international students. There are no tuition fees in principle, but students must pay a social contribution fee of approximately 330 EUR per semester, which includes a semester ticket for public transport. Living costs in Bochum are estimated at a minimum of 950 EUR per month, with various accommodation options available, including student halls and private apartments.

Applicants must have an above-average advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in human geography, law, social or political science, economics, development management, or related fields. The degree should have an overall grade equivalent to 2.7 (fully satisfactory) after at least four years of study, or 1.3 (very good) after three years plus preparatory studies. International degree equivalence is assessed during the application process. A five-page research proposal is required, and guidelines are available on the institute's website. English language proficiency at CEFR level C1 (IELTS 7, TOEFL iBT 94, Duolingo 125) is mandatory unless English was the language of instruction since secondary education.
