PhD Programme in Trustworthy Computing (IMPRS-TRUST) at Max Planck Institutes and Partner Universities Max Planck Institute for Software Systems in Germany

The International Max Planck Research School on Trustworthy Computing (IMPRS-TRUST) offers a fully funded PhD programme in Computer Science, jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS), Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPI-INF), the Computer Science Department at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, and the Computer Science Department at Saarland University. The programme is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced research across a wide range of computer science topics, including trustworthy computing, software systems, informatics, security, distributed systems, formal methods, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.

IMPRS-TRUST provides a research-oriented education with close supervision by world-renowned scientists in a collaborative and competitive environment. Students benefit from international guest lecturers, specialist literature, language training, intercultural skills development, and projects with partners in Germany and abroad. The programme is structured into a preparation phase and a dissertation phase, leading to a doctoral degree from one of the participating universities. Admitted students can enroll at either Saarland University or RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau.

All courses and research activities are conducted in English, and the working language at the participating institutions is English. The programme duration is typically eight semesters, with flexible application deadlines. IMPRS-TRUST assists students in finding accommodation and provides support for international students, including welcome events, buddy programmes, tutors, specialist counselling, visa assistance, and pick-up services.

Funding is available for all admitted PhD students, covering living expenses and tuition fees. Additionally, students pay a semester contribution of approximately 350 EUR, which includes a nationwide student travel ticket for free regional transportation throughout Germany.

Applicants must hold or be about to receive a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science from a research-oriented institution, demonstrate outstanding academic performance, have engaged in research, possess excellent English language skills, and show aptitude for independent, creative work. Application materials include degree certificates, school certificate, academic transcripts, CV, three references, and a personal statement. Submission of GRE and English language test scores is encouraged but not compulsory. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to deliver a 15-minute online research presentation.
