About this position

Join the Centre of Excellence for Gravitational-wave Discovery (OzGrav) at Monash University for a PhD in gravitational-wave astronomy. As a member of Prof Eric Thrane's research group, you will collaborate with leading gravitational-wave researchers across Australia and internationally. The group leverages data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) to explore the fate of massive stars, investigate the formation of binary black holes, and probe the nature of matter at extreme densities. Projects may also incorporate data from gamma-ray burst satellites and optical surveys of flaring supermassive black holes, broadening the scope of astrophysical inquiry.

Current research topics include: probing the population properties of merging binary black holes with gravitational waves, searching for physics beyond general relativity, improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors, and detecting dark matter with the Cherenkov Telescope Array. Collaborative opportunities exist with Prof Paul Lasky and Prof Csaba Balazs, offering interdisciplinary exposure and access to diverse expertise.

Monash University provides a vibrant academic environment, with OzGrav serving as a hub for gravitational-wave discovery. Students benefit from access to world-class facilities, international networks, and a supportive research community. Eligibility requires a strong academic background in physics, astronomy, or related fields, with experience in data analysis or computational methods considered advantageous. English language proficiency must meet university standards.

Funding details are not specified in this announcement. Interested candidates should review the available PhD positions on the Monash University portal and contact Prof Eric Thrane for further information or to discuss alternative project arrangements. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; please check the university website for specific deadlines and requirements.
