About this position

The University of Oslo is offering a PhD Research Fellowship in Quantitative Imaging and Cell Mechanics of Early Embryo Development, based at the Institute of Clinical Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Oslo University Hospital. This position is part of the interdisciplinary GENESIS project, which explores the nexus of gene regulation, epigenomics, and active matter physics during early mammalian embryogenesis. The GENESIS Life Science Convergence Environment brings together expertise in cell biology, advanced microscopy, machine learning, and physics to investigate the fundamental processes that drive blastocyst formation, embryonic axis establishment, and cell fate specification.

The successful candidate will experimentally map and quantify mechanical and dynamical processes in early mouse and human embryogenesis, focusing on cellular motility, shape dynamics, cytoskeletal organization, and force generation. The project is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary team, offering opportunities to collaborate across fields such as gene regulation, active matter physics, and quantitative imaging. The physical place of work will be the new Life Science building at Problemveien 25-29, Oslo.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in medical sciences or a closely related field. A strong background in cell biology, physics, or quantitative imaging is desirable, and experience with microscopy, machine learning, or active matter physics will be considered an advantage. Proficiency in English is required. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and is not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme.
