About this position

The Department of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD position in veterinary anaesthesiology, with the possibility of a 1-year extension. This position is part of the Antifent project, a collaborative research initiative with Oslo University Hospital, aiming to counteract opioid-induced activation of skeletal muscles in animal models. The project is well established, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to translational research at the intersection of veterinary medicine and biomedical science.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment at NMBU, Norway's only institution for veterinary professional education, and will benefit from collaboration with leading researchers and clinicians. The PhD position is funded by NMBU and the Novo Nordisk Foundation, with a competitive salary (NOK 550,800 – 660,000 per year) and operating funds included. The role involves planning and collecting research data from animal models, processing and publishing findings in international peer-reviewed journals, and completing mandatory PhD program courses. For candidates opting for a 4-year track, 25% of the time will be dedicated to clinical work at the Anesthesia Unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Applicants must hold a degree in veterinary medicine recognized for authorization as a veterinarian in Norway and demonstrate a strong academic background. Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required, and experience in scientific research, veterinary anaesthesiology, and laboratory animal science is highly valued. Strong analytical skills, teamwork, and professional motivation are essential. The application process requires submission of a motivation letter, CV, certified diplomas and transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and contact details for two references. International applicants must provide a diploma supplement or equivalent documentation.

To apply, candidates should use the Jobbnorge portal, register an account, and complete the online application form by 9 February 2026. The position offers a stimulating academic environment, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and the chance to make a significant impact on veterinary anaesthesia and opioid research. For further information, contact Professor Henning Andreas Haga at [email protected].
