About this position

The Bioprocess Science and Engineering (BSE) group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Chemical Engineering is offering a PhD scholarship focused on enzyme stability modelling and prediction. The group, embedded in the PROSYS research center, is renowned for developing innovative methods to measure enzyme kinetics and stability under industrial process conditions. This research is crucial for advancing sustainable catalysis and the synthesis of valuable industrial compounds using oxidative enzymes.

This PhD project is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) doctoral network ELEGANCE, which integrates machine learning with multi-parametric enzyme and bioprocess design. The project will involve the expression, characterization, and application of enzymes sourced from the University of Turin and other laboratories. You will test enzyme stability in specialized gas-liquid interface apparatus and other reactors, collect experimental data, and use this data to develop predictive models describing the effects of various conditions on enzyme stability. The project also includes refining these models for different apparatus types and defining algorithms for enzyme stability testing.

As a PhD student, you will combine enzyme and process engineering with advanced modelling, participate in training events, workshops, and secondments within the MSCA ELEGANCE network, and collaborate with local, national, and international partners. You will be expected to report your research in peer-reviewed scientific publications and international conferences, disseminate results through public engagement and social media, and contribute to teaching and supervising MSc and BSc students as well as research assistants.

DTU Chemical Engineering is one of Europe's largest and strongest departments, with world-class facilities including a pilot plant for testing novel concepts. The PhD position is fully funded under the Marie S. Curie compensation scheme, offering a minimum monthly base salary of DKK 29,701.83 plus a PhD supplement, pension contributions, and possible family allowance. The appointment is for three years, with a preferred starting date of 1 June 2026 or as mutually agreed.

Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in biotechnology, (bio)chemical engineering, or a related field. Excellent English proficiency, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team are required. Interest in advanced computational methods is preferred but not mandatory.
