About this position

The Faculty of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University invites applications for one or more PhD stipends in Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Systems, within the doctoral programme in Materials Science, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The position is available from April 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of three years.

This PhD opportunity is embedded in the Artificial Intelligence for Operations Research (AI4OR) group, a dynamic research team at Aalborg University. The group is renowned for its work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and operations research, focusing on the development of advanced algorithms and decision-support systems for autonomous cyber-physical systems. Research in the group addresses high-impact, complex problems in collaboration with leading Danish and European companies, as well as international academic partners.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of trustworthy, real-time autonomous systems that are adaptive, explainable, and robust. The research will explore the convergence of operations research, machine learning, and decision-making methodologies to design systems capable of functioning safely and efficiently under uncertainty. The project will have direct practical relevance through collaborations with industrial and public-sector partners.

The AI4OR group offers a vibrant environment with over 20 full-time researchers, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and strong international collaborations. The Department of Materials and Production supports a wide range of research and educational activities, from basic science to applied research in materials, mechanics, production, and industrial management. The department is committed to innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge sharing, with world-class laboratories supporting research from the atomic scale to device fabrication.

Applicants should have a strong background in AI methods and mathematics, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R. A Master's degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field is required. The ideal candidate will be motivated to develop the next generation of autonomous decision-making systems, integrating operations research and AI, and addressing challenges in multi-agent coordination and decision-making under uncertainty. Experience in disseminating research through journals and conferences, and a willingness to collaborate with industrial and public partners, is expected.

The position may involve limited teaching duties within the Global Business Engineering program and other study programmes at Aalborg University. The employment terms are governed by the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement). The application process includes submission of a motivation letter, CV, diplomas, a brief project motivation, and a list of publications (if applicable) via the university’s recruitment system. Diversity and inclusion are core values at Aalborg University, and all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

For further information or questions about the position, applicants may contact Senior Researcher Søren Byg Vilsen. The application deadline is April 1, 2026.
