About this position

This PhD position is part of the SLICE (Space Launch Impact on Climate and Environment) project, hosted at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), Europe’s largest aerospace research institute. The research focuses on generating experimental data to validate numerical models of launcher engine exhaust chemical composition, specifically for CH4/O2 thrust chambers. The project addresses critical knowledge gaps regarding the environmental impact of rocket launches, particularly their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and ozone layer depletion in the upper atmosphere.

As a doctoral candidate, you will develop and apply advanced laser-based measurement methodologies and mobile instrumentation to collect emission data from sub-scale rocket engine tests. Your work will involve both experimental measurements and data analysis, including spectroscopic techniques and uncertainty quantification. The research aims to build a comprehensive database of exhaust plume characteristics under various operating conditions, providing essential validation data for numerical models used in climate and environmental impact assessments.

The position offers secondment opportunities at leading European research centers, including CERFAS in Toulouse and the University of Stuttgart, to enhance your training and research experience. You will also benefit from access to DLR’s unique ground testing infrastructure and the CARA supercomputer for high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. The SLICE consortium provides a structured training program, international networking, and participation in conferences and outreach activities.

Applicants must hold or be near completion of a Master’s degree in physics, aerospace engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate strong skills in experimental methods, computer science, and optics. Eligibility includes compliance with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and the ability to enroll in a PhD program at RWTH Aachen. The position is fully funded under the MSCA framework, offering a competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. The employment contract is for 36 months, with comprehensive social security and health insurance coverage.

Applicants must hold or be close to completing a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, aerospace engineering, or a closely related field. Essential skills include solid knowledge of computer science and informatics (uncertainty quantification), product and process engineering (space engineering), atomic and molecular physics, and optics (laser-based diagnostics for emissions). Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently and independently in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environment, possess strong teamwork and problem-solving skills, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at RWTH Aachen. Experience with laser-based diagnostics, EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, and project management is desirable. Mobility Rule: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. At the date of recruitment, candidates must not have been awarded a doctoral degree. Knowledge of German is a plus.
