About this position

The Centre of New Technologies at the University of Warsaw announces a competition for a PhD Student position in the Laboratory of Paleogenetics and Conservation Genetics. This opportunity is part of a scientific consortium between Wrocław University and the University of Warsaw, focusing on the project titled "The unresolved and complicated evolutionary history of the cave bear Ursus spelaeus sensu lato in Central Europe." The project leader is Dr hab. Adrian Marciszak (Wrocław University), with Dr. Danijela Popović leading the University of Warsaw team.

The research will involve extracting DNA from ancient samples, preparing DNA sequencing libraries, sequencing on an Illumina platform, and analyzing sequencing data, including population genomic analyses. The successful candidate will actively contribute to preparing data for scientific publications and participate in an exciting research project using state-of-the-art techniques. The laboratory offers access to fully equipped ancient and modern DNA facilities, and the project funds participation in scientific courses and conferences.

Applicants must have an MSc degree in biology or a related discipline, obtained before employment, and confirmed status as a PhD student by the start date. Essential skills include basic knowledge of molecular and population genetics, teamwork, curiosity, motivation to learn, and fluency in English. Experience with ancient DNA, high-throughput sequencing, Linux, and bioinformatic analyses is highly valued. Candidates must meet the conditions specified in the regulations for the National Science Centre OPUS 29 grant.

Required documents include a cover letter, CV, MSc certificate (or document about MSc defense date), document confirming PhD student status, and signed information on personal data processing. Candidates should familiarize themselves with the Internal Reporting Procedure before applying. The selection process includes an online interview scheduled for 4–12 May 2026, with results announced on 15 May 2026 via email and the CeNT UW website.
