About this position

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science, invites applications for a PhD position in Robust Optimization within the Stochastics and Machine Learning research groups. This opportunity is part of the NWO Vidi project “Robust Decisions with Wild Data,” which addresses the challenges of making reliable algorithmic decisions in uncertain and dynamic environments. The project aims to develop innovative methodologies for robust optimization, focusing on certified performance beyond the worst-case scenario and tackling issues such as heavy-tailed outliers, adversarial noise, and dynamically collected data.

As a PhD student, you will explore advanced mathematical concepts at the intersection of distributionally robust optimization and extreme value theory, and contribute to the development of new approaches in robust statistics and anytime-valid statistics. The research will also involve regret minimization, online learning, and learning-augmented algorithms, with the goal of designing practical optimization algorithms for state-of-the-art decision formulations. The project seeks to balance conservatism in robust optimization with the ability to capitalize on opportunities when the worst case does not occur.

Applicants should have an academic Master’s or MPhil/Research Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, operations research, or a closely related field, completed with an excellent GPA (top 10% of class). Strong command of English, academic writing and presentation skills, and experience with scientific programming (Python, Julia, Matlab) are valued. The position offers a four-year contract, starting with 18 months and extendable by 30 months upon positive evaluation. The gross monthly salary ranges from €2,968 in the first year to €3,801 in the fourth year, with additional benefits including an 8% holiday allowance, 8.33% year-end bonus, flexible scheduling, and housing support for expats.

CWI is an internationally oriented institute located at Science Park Amsterdam, with a diverse workforce and a commitment to inclusivity. The institute provides a stimulating research environment, short lines of communication, and various after-work activities. Applications should include a detailed resume, motivation letter, list of MSc courses and grades, a copy of your Master’s thesis, and preferably a list of publications. Apply online before April 1, 2026 for full consideration. For more information, visit the CWI website or contact Dr Bart van Parys at [email protected].
