About this position

The University of Strathclyde’s Aerospace Centre of Excellence (ACE) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the SLICE (Space Launch Impact on Climate and Environment) Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network. This doctoral project (DC14) focuses on multi-fidelity, multi-disciplinary optimisation for sustainable rocket-based launcher systems, aiming to bridge the gap between space engineering and climate science. The research will address the environmental impacts of space launch activities, particularly emissions and their effects on the atmosphere, and will contribute to the development of sustainable access to space in line with the European Green Deal and ESA’s Agenda 2025.

The successful candidate will develop advanced methods for integrating dynamic shape geometries into numerical solvers for complex differential-algebraic systems, enhance multi-fidelity management within design optimisation tools for trans-atmospheric flight, and apply these methods to multi-stage launch vehicles. The project includes secondments at Politecnico di Torino (Italy) and Deimos Engineering and Systems SLU (Spain) for propulsion and emissions modelling and model cross-validation. The research will generate tools for optimal launcher and mission design, robust sustainability assessments, and inform life-cycle analysis (LCA) of launch systems.

Applicants will join an international group of over 30 researchers and benefit from a structured training program, international conferences, and outreach activities. The position is fully funded for 36 months, with a competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance, all according to MSCA regulations. The host institution, University of Strathclyde, is a leading international technological university based in Glasgow, renowned for its research excellence and innovation in energy, manufacturing, and photonics.

Applicants must hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a closely related field, possess strong skills in simulation, optimisation, and modelling, and demonstrate excellent communication in English. Eligibility includes compliance with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and not having been awarded a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment. Applicants must hold or be about to obtain a Master's degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering or a closely related field. Essential skills include solid knowledge of computer science and informatics (simulation, optimisation, modelling tools, surrogate modelling), product and process engineering (space engineering, launch vehicle design, system design, multi-disciplinary design and optimisation, ecodesign), and excellent communication skills in English. Applicants must be able to work efficiently in diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environments, both independently and in teams, and be proactive and able to meet strict deadlines. Candidates must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at the University of Strathclyde and be ready to travel for secondments and events. Desired skills include knowledge in ecodesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, and experience with rocketry competitions or societies. Applicants must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. At the date of recruitment, candidates must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.
