PhD Student Position in Social Neurobiology Lab – Neural Mechanisms of Social Interaction German Primate Center - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Germany

The German Primate Center (DPZ) - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen is a leading institution for primate biology, molecular biomedicine, and neuroscience. The Social Neurobiology Lab at DPZ investigates the neural mechanisms underlying social interactions, focusing on how distinct brain regions assign value to facial expressions and social cues. This research is at the intersection of neuroscience, biology, psychology, and cognitive science, offering a unique opportunity to explore the brain's evaluation of social information in primates.

We are seeking a curious and self-motivated PhD student to join our lab, starting 1st May 2026 (with flexibility for a later start). The position is funded at 65% (E13 TV-L) for 2 years, with a clear path to a 2-year extension, totaling 4 years for the PhD. Funding is secured, and the salary scale follows TV-L regulations, including the VBL pension scheme. The lab provides access to state-of-the-art neurophysiology infrastructure and expertise in primate research, and is surrounded by world-leading neuroscience institutions such as the European Neuroscience Institute and Max Planck Institutes.

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, an MSc in neuroscience, biology, psychology, cognitive science, or a closely related field. Strong candidates will demonstrate a background in experimental neuroscience, animal behavior, or cognitive psychology; experience with data analysis, programming (Python, MATLAB, R), and statistical methods; familiarity with neurophysiology and electrophysiological recording (coursework counts); and comfort working in an empirical, hands-on research environment.
