The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Chair of Space Systems, invites applications for a full-time PhD Student (Research Associate) position within the MSCA Doctoral Network SLICE, focusing on the environmental impact of rocket engine emissions. The project investigates the propagation of rocket engine plumes and their influence on atmospheric layers and climate, using advanced numerical analysis and multiscale simulations. The research aims to define suitable interface regions, analyze plume propagation near the nozzle outlet, simulate downstream expansion in various atmospheric layers, and develop models for climate impact assessment.
The successful candidate will join an international group of over 30 researchers and collaborate with leading European institutions, including secondments at CERFACS (Toulouse, France) and IPSL (Guyancourt, France). The position offers a well-structured training program, opportunities for international networking, and participation in conferences and outreach activities. Funding includes a competitive salary according to MSCA regulations, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. Additional support is provided for training and conference participation.
Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field, with strong knowledge in physical and analytical chemistry, computer science (numerical analysis, simulation, CFD), space engineering, fluid mechanics, and applied physics. Skills in EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessment, and project management are advantageous. Excellent English communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work in diverse, interdisciplinary teams are essential. Candidates must be eligible for PhD enrollment at TU Dresden and comply with the MSCA Mobility Rule (not residing in Germany for more than 12 months in the past 36 months). Solid knowledge is required in physical and analytical chemistry (phase changes), computer science and informatics (numerical analysis, simulation, optimization, modelling tools, CFD), product and process engineering (space engineering), condensed matter physics (fluid mechanics and dynamics), and applied physics (atmospheric entry flows). Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work efficiently and self-reliantly in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and multicultural environment, as well as in a team and independently. Strong problem-solving skills, adherence to strict deadlines, proactive attitude, and excellent communication skills in English are essential. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at TU Dresden. Knowledge in EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, project management, and the host institution language is a plus. Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master’s degree but must have it before employment. The MSCA Mobility Rule applies: researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.
