The University of Leeds, a global leader in atmospheric science, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA SLICE doctoral network. This project addresses the urgent need to understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of increasing space activities, focusing on the effects of rocket and satellite re-entry on the atmosphere and climate.

Project Overview: The SLICE network bridges space engineering and climate science, aiming to close critical gaps in the life-cycle analysis of space launch systems. The doctoral candidate will investigate the environmental consequences of aluminum-containing particles produced during re-entry, using a combination of laboratory experiments and advanced chemistry-climate modelling (WACCM). Key objectives include measuring HCl uptake on alumina particles, assessing their role in polar stratospheric cloud formation, and simulating their global impacts on ozone and climate.

Research Environment: The successful candidate will join an international group of over 30 researchers and benefit from a structured training program, international conferences, and secondments at leading institutions such as the Paul Scherrer Institut (Switzerland) and the Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace (France). The School of Chemistry at Leeds is renowned for its expertise in chemical kinetics and atmospheric science, and the project is closely linked to the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science.

Funding and Benefits: The position is funded for 36 months through the Horizon Europe MSCA program, offering a competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. The candidate will be employed by the University of Leeds and participate in international research and outreach activities.

Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must have (or be close to completing) a MSc or equivalent in atmospheric science, chemistry, physics, or a related field. Essential skills include strong communication in English, teamwork, problem-solving, and readiness to travel for secondments. Applicants must meet the MSCA Mobility Rule (not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the past 36 months) and must not already hold a doctoral degree.
