About this position

[Funding is sought from the University of Nottingham as part of a competitive process. Covers home tuition fees and UKRI stipend for 42 months.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham offers an exciting opportunity to advance the field of 3D-printing of responsive biomaterial devices. Hosted within the Faculty of Engineering's Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM), the project focuses on developing innovative 4D-printed devices that interact with their environment and respond to stimuli such as temperature and light. These devices are designed for advanced personalised drug delivery, with applications spanning biomedical, micromechanical, and optoelectronic fields.

As a student, you will join a world-class interdisciplinary team with expertise in 3D printing, biotechnology, physics, and materials science. The research will involve formulating new 3D-printable materials and pioneering design methods for functional 4D-printed devices, targeting either fast self-resetting responses or complex multi-scale shape changes. The project is aligned with the 'Dialling up Performance for on Demand Manufacturing' programme grant, providing access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, advanced bio-printing equipment, and a collaborative environment with nine other PhD students, 15 postdoctoral researchers, 18 academics from five universities, and 11 industry leaders in pharmaceutical and additive manufacturing.

The studentship is open to UK/home and international candidates. Funding is provided through a competitive process by the University of Nottingham, covering home tuition fees and a UKRI stipend for 42 months. The start date is October 2026. Candidates must have or expect to obtain a 2:1 or first-class degree in physical sciences (engineering, chemistry, physics), with a background in engineering, materials science, or chemistry. Ideal applicants will be motivated to learn new disciplines, innovate, and develop expertise in 3D printing, materials science, biotechnology, and engineering. Interests in programming and interdisciplinary research are advantageous.

To apply, submit a covering letter, CV, and academic transcripts to Geoffrey Rivers at [email protected], referencing the project title. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is appointed. This studentship prepares graduates for careers in both industry and academia, equipping them with cutting-edge skills in additive manufacturing and biomaterials research.
