About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia investigates the genetic basis of resistance, tolerance, and susceptibility to viral infections in threatened bird species, with a primary focus on the Mauritius parakeet. The research addresses how population bottlenecks erode genetic variation, increasing vulnerability to viral epidemics, and seeks to answer what makes individuals resistant, tolerant, or susceptible to viruses. The project leverages a rich dataset from over 20 years of viral outbreak monitoring and hundreds of sequenced bird genomes, including several well-studied avian models.

The successful candidate will analyze data from 531 full-sib pairs of Mauritius parakeets with known disease status, using bioinformatics and AI modelling to predict responses to viral infection based on genomics data. Comparative genomics across parakeets and parrots, as well as optional fieldwork in Mauritius, are integral components. The research methodology includes sequencing, immune gene analysis, constructing AI models to identify genomic predictors, and using SLiM modelling to assess how genomic erosion impacts immunogenetic diversity and disease susceptibility. Hypotheses to be tested include the effects of genome erosion, inbreeding, and runs of homozygosity on viral susceptibility, and the role of immune gene alleles in disease status.

Training will be provided in AI and SLiM modelling, genomics, immune gene analysis, bird conservation, and tropical fieldwork. Applicants should have a strong background in evolutionary biology, genetics, or conservation biology, with desirable skills in coding (Python, SLiM), AI modelling, and teamwork.

The position is full-time, starting 1 October 2026, and is funded by an ARIES studentship covering fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training grant. International applicants may have the fee difference waived, but relocation and visa costs are not covered. English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category) is required.

Applications should be submitted via the University of East Anglia's admissions portal, ensuring all eligibility criteria are met.
