PhD Studentship: Historical Genomics of the Declining Red Squirrel in Britain

The University of East Anglia invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship focused on the historical genomics of the red squirrel, an iconic but declining species in Britain. Supervised by Dr Anders Bergström, this project aims to unravel the genetic history and conservation challenges of the red squirrel, which has faced significant threats from invasive species, hunting, and habitat loss since the late 1700s. Notably, repeated introductions of continental red squirrels represent a unique, centuries-long attempt at genetic rescue, the effects of which remain poorly understood.

The research will employ cutting-edge historical DNA techniques to sequence whole genomes from both surviving British red squirrel populations and continental reference groups. By analyzing museum specimens, the project will directly assess changes in genetic diversity, inbreeding, and genetic load over time, and evaluate the impact of past introductions on the persistence of native ancestry and local adaptations. The findings will provide both general insights into the genetics of population decline and rescue, and specific guidance for future conservation efforts of the red squirrel.

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in molecular biology, historical DNA analysis, genomics, bioinformatics, and population genetics. Additional professional development includes participation in journal clubs, departmental seminars, conference presentations, and science communication activities.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold at least a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) degree at 2:1 level in a relevant field such as Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Zoology, Evolution, Ancient DNA, or Archaeology. A strong interest in genomics, wet-lab work, and evolutionary biology is essential. English language proficiency at IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in each component) is required.

Funding: The ARIES studentship covers full tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant (RTSG). International applicants may have the difference between 'home' and 'international' fees waived, but relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not included.

Application deadline: 7 January 2026. The position is full-time and will commence on 1 October 2026.

How to apply: Applications should be submitted via the University of East Anglia's postgraduate research application portal. Please review the eligibility criteria and prepare all necessary documentation before applying. For further details and to apply, visit the official application link.
