About this position

[School of Computer Science Studentship, providing full academic fees and a tax-free maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate of £21,805 per year for 3.5 years.]

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Leeds offers an exciting opportunity to develop advanced AI solutions for image guided intervention, supported by mixed reality technologies. The project is based in the School of Computer Science and is supported by a studentship covering full academic fees and a tax-free maintenance grant at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year for 3.5 years). Both UK and international students are eligible to apply.

The research will focus on the development of innovative methods for image registration, anatomy segmentation, and immersive technology integration. The successful candidate will work with preoperative MRI and CT scans to generate 3D models of organs, as well as intra-operative surgical videos. The project aims to enhance surgical planning and implement new technologies for integration as VR/AR assistive platforms, with research directions tailored according to progress and ongoing consultation with clinical colleagues and supervisors.

Supervision will be provided by Dr Sharib Ali (lead supervisor), Dr Rafael Kuffner dos Anjos (co-supervisor), and Dr Shahid Farid (clinical, external). The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with computational scientists and surgeons, exploring novel approaches to transform research and practice in surgical care. The ideal applicant will have a strong academic background, holding at least a first class or upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and prior knowledge in deep learning and computer graphics is highly desirable.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Sharib Ali informally with their CV and a short list of interests for discussion prior to applying. The application deadline is 30 April 2026. For further details and to apply, please visit the project page.
