About this position

This PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia places you at the cutting edge of marine ecosystem research, leveraging machine learning to address urgent challenges in marine conservation. The UK marine environment is under increasing pressure from human activities and climate change, making the development of smart, evidence-based management tools essential. The project focuses on identifying reliable, measurable indicators of change in marine ecosystems—such as shifts in species populations—and interpreting what these indicators reveal about ecosystem health. You will develop and apply advanced machine-learning techniques to pinpoint the most informative indicators and use them to construct dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) models.

These models will simulate ecosystem responses to future climate and human use scenarios, assess the strengths and limitations of DBN approaches across different regions and timescales, and translate model outputs into policy-relevant insights for designing effective Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and guiding Marine Spatial Planning. Training will be provided in marine ecosystem modelling, using both field-based and modelled data, and you will collaborate with the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science to gain exposure to how scientific research informs UK policy. The program includes sea-going field experience and hands-on training with state-of-the-art instruments aboard the RV CEFAS Endeavour. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about marine ecology and computing, has some programming and data handling experience, and is eager to communicate findings to stakeholders and contribute to sustainable marine management.

Entry requirements include a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 degree in environmental, marine, or mathematical sciences (or similar), and English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category). The position is full-time, starting 1 October 2026. Funding is provided through a fully-funded ARIES studentship, covering fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant. International applicants may have the difference between 'home' and 'international' fees waived, but relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.

Funding details
